St. Cuthbert’s Cross

Cuthbert of Lindisfarne lived in the 600s in the kingdom on Northumbria. He was instrumental in spreading Christianity to the Celtic people and spent much of his time living and working among them. Well known for his piety, diligence and obedience, Cuthbert served as a monk and later as a bishop.

St. Cuthbert’s coffin was carved with both Latin and runic characters, including ᛁᚻᛋ ᛉᛈᛋ, the runic variant of Chi Rho. The coffin also included Cuthbert’s pectoral cross. A variation of the cross is depicted here, along with the runic declaration.
